Mercury General Corporation has had a massive run over the last year, putting up a gain of around 90%. This insurance provider, heavily focused on auto and home coverage in California, has been riding a strong wave of sector momentum. When a stock more than doubles in a short window, a pullback is not just normal but it's necessary to shake out the weak hands and reset the valuation. That very much looks like what we are seeing here.
Fundamentally, this move has been driven by a "hard market" in insurance, meaning they’ve been able to push through significant rate increases to offset costs. Their recent earnings have been impressive, consistently beating estimates as their combined ratios improve. The current dip seems to be a mix of profit-taking after the 2025 rally and perhaps some general caution around seasonal wildfire risks which California is particularly prone to. The core business of higher premiums and better underwriting margins remains intact.
Technically, the chart is setting up a classic trend-following opportunity. The price has pulled back right into the 50-day SMA (the orange line), which is often the line in the sand for institutional support. The RSI has cooled significantly from overbought levels down to a comfortable 46, giving the stock plenty of room to run if buyers step back in. While the MACD is still heading down, it looks like it is shaping up to start to turn back to the upside.
Nice run and pullback, and looks like it might be about to run again. Needs to break through that psychological $100 mark and head up from there.
Might be worth a watch.
