Trend Reversal Indicator (TRI)

Trend Reversal Indicator (TRI) is a persistence-based oscillator designed to highlight areas where directional market pressure becomes extended and may begin to weaken.

The indicator does not attempt to predict price direction.
Instead, it evaluates how long price continues pushing in one direction relative to an adaptive reference derived from price and volatility.

When sustained directional pressure begins to fade after reaching an extreme condition, TRI highlights potential reversal environments.

What the Indicator Does

  • Highlights potential trend exhaustion after sustained directional pressure
  • Identifies reversal environments using a persistence-based oscillator
  • Filters signals using structural and momentum conditions
  • Provides higher-timeframe context through an integrated MTF scanner

Algorithm Overview

TRI is built around a persistence-based analytical framework.

Instead of relying on traditional oscillators such as RSI or Stochastic, the indicator evaluates how consistently price remains above or below a volatility-adjusted baseline.

Simplified calculation process:

  1. An adaptive baseline is derived from a moving average of price.
  2. A confirmation band is calculated using market volatility.
  3. The algorithm measures how many bars remain above or below this band.
  4. This persistence score is mapped into a bounded oscillator between 0 and 100.
  5. The oscillator is smoothed to reduce short-term noise.

This persistence model allows the indicator to identify situations where directional pressure has lasted long enough to potentially reach exhaustion.

Oscillator Structure

The TRI oscillator operates on a bounded 0–100 scale.

  • Higher values indicate persistent bullish pressure
  • Lower values indicate persistent bearish pressure
  • Extreme values indicate prolonged directional activity

These extreme conditions are used to evaluate possible reversal environments.

Reversal Zones

Two zones define potential exhaustion areas:

  • Upper Reversal Zone — potential bearish reversal environment
  • Lower Reversal Zone — potential bullish reversal environment

Signals do not appear immediately when the oscillator enters these zones.

The indicator waits until persistence conditions are satisfied and momentum begins to weaken.

Signal Generation Logic

A signal appears when several conditions are satisfied:

  1. The oscillator previously entered an extreme zone
  2. The extreme condition persisted long enough
  3. The oscillator begins reversing direction
  4. Optional confirmation filters allow the signal
  5. Minimum spacing between signals is respected

Signals therefore represent potential exhaustion points following sustained directional pressure.

Signal Quality Scoring

Each signal is internally evaluated using three analytical components:

  • Depth of the extreme condition
  • Persistence of the extreme zone
  • Strength of the reversal movement

Signals that reach the highest score threshold are labeled:

Strong

This helps identify reversal environments where the exhaustion structure appears more developed.

Multi-Timeframe Scanner

The indicator includes an integrated Multi-Timeframe Scanner that summarizes oscillator conditions across higher timeframes.

For each timeframe the panel displays:

  • Oscillator level
  • Momentum direction
  • Structural bias

This allows traders to quickly understand broader market context before evaluating a signal.

How Traders Often Use TRI

A typical workflow may look like this:

  1. Observe the oscillator for extended extreme conditions
  2. Wait for a signal after persistence requirements are satisfied
  3. Evaluate price behavior around the signal
  4. Check higher-timeframe context using the MTF scanner
  5. Apply independent risk management

TRI is designed as an analytical decision-support tool and is often used alongside price action analysis.

Quick Setup

Trading Profile
  • Conservative — fewer but more selective signals
  • Balanced — default configuration
  • Aggressive — earlier signals with higher frequency
  • Custom — enables manual parameter tuning

Market Speed
  • Slow Markets — smoother response
  • Mixed Markets — balanced sensitivity
  • Fast Markets — faster oscillator reaction

Signal Controls
  • Signal Direction — display long signals, short signals, or both
  • Require Strong Extreme — requires persistence inside extreme zones
  • Show Signal Arrows — displays triangle signal markers
  • Show Strong Labels — displays labels for the highest-scoring signals

Market Filters
  • Use Trend Confirmation — filters signals relative to internal trend context
  • Use Momentum Slope Filter — requires oscillator momentum to begin turning

Reversal Levels
  • Upper Reversal Zone — threshold for bearish reversal environments
  • Lower Reversal Zone — threshold for bullish reversal environments

MTF Scanner
  • Show MTF Scanner — displays oscillator states across multiple higher timeframes

Advanced Settings
  • Core Trend Length — controls the responsiveness of the internal baseline
  • Oscillator Smoothing — adjusts oscillator smoothness
  • Minimum Extreme Bars — defines how long the oscillator must remain in the extreme zone before a signal qualifies
