💥 Gold Rockets to $3,945
- Gold prices
XAUUSD pushed higher Monday morning, soaring to a fresh record high of $3,945 per ounce. It wasn’t just a single factor driving bullion’s valuation.
- A cocktail of events and expectations prompted traders to seek exposure to the ultimate safe haven play. The US government shutdown continues for another day, apparently, without a funding deal in the Senate.
- But also, rate cut expectations are fueling demand for gold, which gets more appealing in a low-rate environment. It’s the old “opportunity cost” narrative where fixed-income yields don’t stand out with much and gold looks like a better deal.
📣 US Debt and Gold Gains
- Looming US debt and a consistently weak US dollar are also contributing to gold’s rally. The US now holds roughly $38 trillion in debt and Trump’s massive tax bill is expected to add another $3.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. The US dollar is lower by 10% since the start of the year.
- The result is a whopping 50% year-to-date gains for gold. The precious metal literally never looked back once it kicked off this year’s trading. Its lowest price was logged on the first trading day of January and it’s been up only since.
- More recently, gold just notched its seventh straight week of increases, picking up gains of nearly 20%. No other megacap asset even comes close to this performance during that period.
📦 What’s Next for Bullion?
- Looking ahead, the economic blackout is expected to continue until the Democrats and the Republicans get 60 votes in the Senate for a bill funding government services.
- That means no nonfarm payrolls, no inflation data, no visibility into what’s going on with the economy, the labor market, and price growth. But that may also mean more attention to gold as a haven asset. So, go gold bugs?
- The bullish attitude was reinforced by Swiss banking giant UBS, who last month projected a price target of $4,200 over the coming months. “The opportunity cost of holding gold is falling thanks to declining real interest rates in the US.” the lender said.
