Gold Tests $4,000 Ahead of US-Iran Talks – Breakdown or Rebound?

90
Gold experienced a sharp sell-off today, briefly falling below the psychological $4,000 level before attracting strong buying interest and recovering. The decline appeared to be driven more by profit-taking and position adjustments ahead of the upcoming US-Iran talks rather than a major change in the long-term trend.

The meeting between the US and Iran is now the key short-term catalyst. A constructive outcome could ease geopolitical tensions and reduce safe-haven demand, potentially pushing gold back toward the $3,970-$4,000 support zone. However, if negotiations deteriorate or tensions escalate, safe-haven flows could quickly return and drive another test of the $4,050 resistance area.

At the same time, the macro backdrop has shifted. Markets are no longer fully pricing aggressive Fed rate cuts and have begun discussing the possibility of rates staying higher for longer, or even additional tightening if inflation remains persistent. Higher yields and a stronger US dollar are creating headwinds for gold in the near term.

Technical Levels
XAUUSD
Resistance: $4,050
Key Support: $4,000
Secondary Support: $3,970

A sustained break above $4,050 could open the door toward $4,100-$4,120. Conversely, a decisive break below $4,000 would increase the risk of a deeper correction.

Weekly Outlook: Neutral to slightly bearish while price remains below $4,050, with markets focused on Fed policy expectations and the outcome of the US-Iran talks.

Monthly Outlook: The broader bullish structure remains intact, but gold may enter a longer consolidation phase as investors reassess the path of US interest rates. For now, the battle around $4,000 could determine whether gold is preparing for another rally or a deeper retracement.
