Trading Basics Ep.9 — Risk Management Explained

95

🟢Risk Management is the process of protecting your trading capital by controlling potential losses on every trade.

Many traders focus only on profits, but long-term success depends on managing risk consistently.

WHAT IS RISK MANAGEMENT?

Risk Management helps traders:

✓ Protect trading capital

✓ Survive losing streaks

✓ Maintain emotional discipline

✓ Achieve long-term consistency

THE 1% - 2% RULE

A common approach is to risk only 1% to 2% of your account on a single trade.

Example:

Account Balance = $10,000

1% Risk = $100

This means if the trade hits your stop-loss, the maximum loss is limited to $100.

RISK-TO-REWARD RATIO (RR)

Risk-to-Reward compares potential profit to potential loss.

Examples:

1:1 RR = Risk $100 to make $100

1:2 RR = Risk $100 to make $200

1:3 RR = Risk $100 to make $300

Higher Risk-to-Reward ratios can help traders remain profitable even with lower win rates.

COMMON MISTAKES

❌ Risking too much on a single trade

❌ Moving stop-loss emotionally

❌ Revenge trading after losses

❌ Overtrading

❌ Ignoring position sizing

WHY IS RISK MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT?

✓ Protects your account

✓ Reduces emotional decisions

✓ Improves consistency

✓ Helps survive market uncertainty

✓ Creates sustainable growth

SIMPLE IDEA

Professional traders focus on protecting capital first and making profits second.

If you protect your capital, you will always have opportunities to trade another day.

Capital Preservation > Fast Profits

Risk Management is one of the most important skills in trading and often matters more than strategy itself.
