[blackcat] L2 Ehlers Super Smoother Filter

Level: 2
Background
John F. Ehlers introuced Super Smoother Filter in Jan, 2014.
Function
In “Predictive And Successful Indicators” in Jan, 2014, John Ehlers describes a new method for smoothing market data while reducing the lag that most other smoothing techniques have. And this is a very popular filter to eliminate noise of market signal.
Key Signal
Filt --> Ehlers Super Smoother Filter fast line
Trigger --> Ehlers Super Smoother Filter slow line
Pros and Cons
100% John F. Ehlers definition translation, even variable names are the same. This help readers who would like to use pine to read his book.
Remarks
The 100th script for Blackcat1402 John F. Ehlers Week publication.

In real life, I am a prolific inventor. I have successfully applied for more than 60 international and regional patents in the past 12 years. But in the past two years or so, I have tried to transfer my creativity to the development of trading strategies. Tradingview is the ideal platform for me. I am selecting and contributing some of the hundreds of scripts to publish in Tradingview community. Welcome everyone to interact with me to discuss these interesting pine scripts.
The scripts posted are categorized into 5 levels according to my efforts or manhours put into these works.
Level 1 : interesting script snippets or distinctive improvement from classic indicators or strategy. Level 1 scripts can usually appear in more complex indicators as a function module or element.
Level 2 : composite indicator/strategy. By selecting or combining several independent or dependent functions or sub indicators in proper way, the composite script exhibits a resonance phenomenon which can filter out noise or fake trading signal to enhance trading confidence level.
Level 3 : comprehensive indicator/strategy. They are simple trading systems based on my strategies. They are commonly containing several or all of entry signal, close signal, stop loss, take profit, re-entry, risk management, and position sizing techniques. Even some interesting fundamental and mass psychological aspects are incorporated.
Level 4 : script snippets or functions that do not disclose source code. Interesting element that can reveal market laws and work as raw material for indicators and strategies. If you find Level 1~2 scripts are helpful, Level 4 is a private version that took me far more efforts to develop.
Level 5 : indicator/strategy that do not disclose source code. private version of Level 3 script with my accumulated script processing skills or a large number of custom functions. I had a private function library built in past two years. Level 5 scripts use many of them to achieve private trading strategy.

OVERVIEW This indicator implements the Ehlers Super Smoother Filter, a technical analysis tool designed to smooth price data while preserving sharp turning points. It generates trading signals based on crossover events between the filtered price and its trigger line.FEATURES
• Advanced smoothing algorithm that preserves trend direction
• Visual representation of filtered price and trigger line
• Color-coded fill area between lines indicating trend direction
• Buy/Sell signal labels at crossover points
• Customizable price source and smoothing length
• Built-in alert conditions for buy/sell signals
HOW TO USE
Select the desired price source (default: middle of high-low range)
Adjust the smoothing length parameter (default: 10)
Monitor the indicator for: • Crossovers between filtered price and trigger line • Color changes in the fill area • Label markers for buy/sell signals
PARAMETERS
• Price: Source price series for filtering
• Length: Smoothing period for the filter
LIMITATIONS
• May lag behind price action depending on length setting
• Works best in trending markets
• Requires sufficient historical data for accurate calculations
NOTES
• Indicator uses Ehlers' proprietary smoothing technique
• Labels are placed at previous bar's close price
• Fill area colors indicate trend direction (yellow for uptrend, fuchsia for downtrend)

█ OVERVIEWThis open-source indicator applies John Ehlers' Super Smoother Filter to price and generates BUY/SELL signals when the filtered line crosses its two-bar-lagged trigger. V2 keeps the original crossover logic unchanged while adding a position state machine, ATR-based risk levels, dedicated exit alerts, and a status dashboard.
█ CONCEPTS
• Super Smoother Filter: a recursive two-pole low-pass filter that suppresses aliasing noise more effectively than a moving average, producing a smoother curve with less lag
• Trigger line: the filter value delayed by two bars; crossings between the two lines mark momentum shifts of the smoothed price
• Flip logic: a BUY closes any short and opens the long state; a SELL closes any long and opens the short state, so every entry and exit forms a complete trading cycle
█ HOW TO USE
1 — Add the indicator to an overlay chart; it runs on any symbol and timeframe
2 — Tune Length (default 10) to balance smoothness against lag; higher values filter more noise but react slower
3 — Read signals from the chart labels and subscribe to any of the five alert channels
4 — Use the ATR Stop Loss / Take Profit lines as reference levels for your own order placement
Input Parameters
• Price: source fed into the filter (default hl2)
• Length: smoothing period of the Super Smoother Filter (default 10)
• Enable Short Signals: set to false for long-only trading; SELL signals then act as exit-to-flat
• Cooldown Bars: minimum bar spacing between signals, 0 disables the throttle (default 0)
• Show ATR TP/SL Levels: toggles the risk reference lines
• ATR Length: period of the Average True Range used by the risk levels (default 14)
• Stop Loss (xATR) / Take Profit (xATR): risk distances from entry price in ATR multiples (defaults 2.0 / 3.0)
• Show Dashboard / Show Position Background: toggle the status table and the position shading
█ FEATURES
• Edge-triggered crossover signals — one signal per crossing, confirmed at bar close
• Configurable cooldown to suppress whipsaw in ranging markets
• ATR-adaptive Stop Loss and Take Profit reference levels
• Five alert channels: Buy, Sell, Long Exit, Short Exit, Exit to Flat
• Position state background shading and a real-time dashboard (position, entry price, ATR, SL, TP)
• Typed, range-constrained and grouped inputs
█ SIGNALS
Visual Elements
• Yellow line: Super Smoother Filter (Filt)
• Fuchsia line: Trigger (filter delayed by two bars); the shaded band is yellow above the trigger and fuchsia below
• Green BUY label below the bar: Filt crossed above Trigger — exit short / enter long
• Red SELL label above the bar: Filt crossed below Trigger — exit long / enter short
• Red / teal stepped lines: ATR-based Stop Loss and Take Profit reference levels while a position is open
• Light green / light red background: long / short position state
• Top-right dashboard: position state, entry price, ATR, current SL and TP levels
• Position State in the Data Window: +1 long, -1 short, 0 flat
█ IMPLEMENTATION NOTES
The filter is the classic recursive Ehlers Super Smoother; its coefficients derive from Length through exponential and cosine terms. Signals use ta.crossover / ta.crossunder between Filt and the Trigger, evaluated consistently on every bar and confirmed at bar close, so alerts do not repaint. Risk levels are built on ta.atr. Historical references are guarded with nz(), and label count is capped at 500. The script uses no request.security calls, therefore no higher-timeframe repainting exists.
█ LIMITATIONS
• Any smoother lags price; shorter Length values react faster but whipsaw more in ranges
• TP/SL lines are reference levels for manual trading, not executed orders — this is an indicator, not a strategy
• Risk levels track the current ATR, so they shift as volatility changes instead of freezing at entry
• Raise Cooldown Bars in choppy markets to reduce false flip signals
█ NOTES
• Filter concept: John F. Ehlers, Cybernetic Analysis for Stocks and Futures (2008)
