BTM - Volatility Momentum
A momentum oscillator that measures trend strength in units of volatility, so the same levels mean the same thing on any market or timeframe: stocks, forex, crypto, indices, from 1-minute to weekly charts.
HOW IT WORKS
The indicator takes the gap between a fast and a slow EMA and divides it by the Average True Range, scaled ×100. A reading of +100 means the fast EMA sits one full ATR above the slow EMA. Because momentum is measured against the market's own volatility, the levels don't need re-tuning when you switch symbols.
LEVELS
• Quiet zone (±50 by default): momentum is weak and crosses here are ignored, because this is where most false starts happen.
• Bull / Bear bands (between ±50 and ±150): momentum is established.
• Stretch level (±150): momentum is overextended and more likely to snap back. The background highlights when price is stretched.
FILTERS
• Thrust gate: combines the slope of a short EMA with the slope of the histogram. Longs are blocked while thrust is down and shorts are blocked while thrust is up. Candles are coloured by thrust (up / down / flat).
• Trend filter: momentum entries are only taken in the direction of a long-term EMA (200 by default).
SIGNALS
• MOM: the momentum line crosses its trigger line inside the bull or bear band, with the trend and thrust gate agreeing.
• PB (Pullback): in an uptrend, momentum turns back up from the bear band or lower. Shorts mirror this.
• ◆ Stretch exit: momentum falls back out of the stretched zone, a warning that the move may be tiring.
Short signals are off by default and can be turned on in the settings.
PANEL
An on-chart panel shows the current momentum state, a visual meter from −200 to +200, histogram value, whether momentum is building or easing, trend direction and distance from the trend EMA, thrust state, a higher-timeframe momentum reading, and the most recent signal with how many bars ago it fired.
EXTRA OPTIONS
• Quick fast line: swaps the fast EMA for a lag-compensated version so turns appear sooner, at the cost of a few more false starts in ranges.
• Four colour themes, histogram as columns or area, optional glow, cloud and shaded levels.
• Alerts for every signal type.
NON-REPAINTING
Signals only confirm on closed bars, and the higher-timeframe reading uses the last completed bar of that timeframe. Set alerts to "Once Per Bar Close".
