Opening Range Breakout for Tokyo, London, and New York sessions. Marks the high and low of the first N minutes of each major trading session, fills the range as a translucent box, and projects 1R / 2R / 3R extension levels above and below.
ORB is a documented institutional strategy (Toby Crabel, "Day Trading with Short Term Price Patterns", 1990). The opening range establishes the day's initial supply/demand balance. Sustained breakouts beyond it tend to continue; failed breakouts often reverse to the opposite side.
WHAT IT PLOTS
A translucent box covering the high-to-low range of the first N minutes of each enabled session.
Range high and range low lines, drawn from session open through session close.
1R, 2R, and 3R extensions above and below the range, projected as horizontal levels (only after the range is locked).
Optional breakout triangles on the bar where price first closes above or below the range. Green triangle below the bar = bullish breakout. Red triangle above the bar = bearish breakout.
USAGE
NY session ORB: most documented use case. Best on US equities, US futures (ES, NQ, YM, CL, GC), and during US session for major forex pairs.
London session ORB: best on European indices and forex during European hours.
Tokyo session ORB: typically less reliable due to thin liquidity but useful for JPY pairs.
A clean ORB long setup is: price builds the range during the first N minutes, breaks above with conviction (volume, no immediate retest), and reaches 1R within the session. The 1R / 2R / 3R extensions serve as profit targets. Failed breakouts (price returns inside the range and then breaks the opposite side) are also commonly traded.
This indicator does not generate trade signals. The breakout triangles mark the first close beyond the range; whether that close is a valid trade entry depends on context (volume, HTF trend, prior structure) that this indicator does not evaluate.
SETTINGS
Range Duration: 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. 15 min is the standard for US equities. 60 min is more common for forex and indices.
Fill Range as Box: shows the OR area as a translucent background. Recommended on, makes the range visually obvious.
Show Extensions: 1R, 2R, 3R toggles individually. Default 1R and 2R on.
Show Breakout Markers: optional triangles on the first close beyond the range.
Per-session colors are fully customizable.
By default only the NY session is enabled. Tokyo and London can be enabled in the SESSIONS group when needed.
