s Pfizer (PFE) a Top Hedge Fund Pick in Medical Research? A Look at Recent Developments
As investors continue to scan the healthcare sector for promising opportunities, the question often arises: is Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) one of the best medical research stocks to buy according to hedge funds? To help answer that, it is worth examining the company's recent regulatory progress, financial performance, and analyst sentiment.

FDA Grants Priority Review for Expanded Hemophilia Treatment
On February 6, Pfizer announced a significant regulatory milestone. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted and granted Priority Review for the company's supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) regarding its therapy HYMPAVZI®. This application seeks to expand the approved indication of the drug to include the treatment of hemophilia A or B patients aged six years and older who have inhibitors. Additionally, the application covers pediatric patients with hemophilia A or B without inhibitors.

This potential expansion builds on HYMPAVZI's existing approval in the United States. The therapy is currently authorized for the treatment of patients 12 years of age and older who have hemophilia A without factor VIII inhibitors, or hemophilia B without factor IX inhibitors. The new application aims to broaden the eligible patient population to include younger children and those with the most challenging-to-treat forms of the condition.

Pfizer further reported that the FDA has set a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date in the second quarter of 2026. If approved, HYMPAVZI would offer a compelling new option for these difficult-to-treat patient groups. The therapy is designed to provide robust bleed protection through a straightforward, once-weekly subcutaneous injection. Importantly, it requires minimal preparation and does not necessitate routine, treatment-related laboratory monitoring, potentially simplifying disease management for patients and caregivers alike.

Citi Maintains Hold Rating Amidst Mixed Earnings Report
In other news concerning the pharmaceutical giant, Citi recently reaffirmed its Hold rating on Pfizer shares. On February 4, the firm set a price target of $26.00 for the stock. This analyst update followed the company's release of its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 earnings results on February 3.

For the full year 2025, Pfizer reported revenues of $62.6 billion. This figure reflects a 2% operational decline compared to the previous year, on a constant currency basis. However, the company was quick to note that when excluding the contributions from its COVID-19 products, Paxlovid and Comirnaty, operational revenues actually grew by 6%. This highlights the underlying growth within its broader portfolio of established medicines and newer launches.

Looking at the fourth quarter alone, revenues came in at $17.6 billion. This represents a 3% operational decline year-over-year, again illustrating the ongoing transition as the company moves past the peak demand for its pandemic-related products and focuses on its core pipeline and legacy pharmaceutical business.
