The GST Council is considering cutting the current 18% GST slab on mobile phones.
The move comes as smartphone demand in India has slowed down.
According to the IDC Quarterly Tracker
(1) Total shipments fell to 33.2 million units for the April–June quarter.
(2) Direct Y-O-Y shipment volume drop of roughly to 4.1 million
(3) Drop dragged H1 of 2026 to 64.2 million units
(4) Marking India’s lowest H1 shipment volume in five years.
(5) Massive surge in memory chips component which rose up to 200%–400%, Y-O-Y
(6) Brands were forced to aggressively bump up handset prices
(7) Brands also phased out models under ₹10,000
(8) Average Selling Price of smartphone in India jumped 15% to an all-time high of $315
(9) Phone shipments fell by 11% between April and June this year.

As India's largest localized electronics assembler, is highly levered to domestic smartphone consumption, selling roughly 86–88% of its smartphone volume within India. Price rationalization significantly triggers factory throughput
