Overview
Traditional RSI is excellent at identifying momentum extremes, but its turns can sometimes appear gradual or muted—especially when momentum transitions occur quickly. FisherRSI is designed to make those transitions stand out.
FisherRSI is designed to make RSI turning points sharper, clearer, and easier to recognize.
The indicator applies a Fisher Transform directly to RSI, creating a more responsive representation of momentum that emphasizes changes in direction rather than simply showing where RSI is currently positioned.
The result is an oscillator that helps bring greater definition to momentum shifts, reversals, and turning points, while retaining the familiar 0–100 RSI framework.
Concept
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) measures the balance between recent upward and downward price movement and expresses that momentum on a 0–100 scale.
At its core, RSI compares the magnitude of recent gains with recent losses over a defined lookback period. When upward price movement dominates, RSI rises. When downward movement dominates, RSI falls.
The important characteristic of RSI is that it is bounded. No matter how strong the underlying price movement becomes, RSI remains between 0 and 100.
That makes RSI excellent for identifying momentum regimes and extremes, but it also means that changes in momentum can sometimes appear compressed—particularly when RSI is moving through an extreme or transitioning rapidly.
Enter the Fisher Transform
The Fisher Transform approaches the problem differently.
Instead of simply smoothing or averaging RSI, the Fisher Transform first rescales the RSI's position over a lookback period, effectively asking where the current RSI sits relative to its recent high and low values.
That normalized position is then passed through the Fisher transformation.
The process can be thought of conceptually as:
Price → RSI → Normalize RSI → Fisher Transformation → Momentum Signal
The important effect is that the transformation redistributes the signal, giving considerably more definition to movements occurring near the edges of its range. Values that might appear relatively compressed in the original RSI can become much more pronounced after the transformation.
In practical terms, this creates a signal that is more sensitive to the shape and direction of the RSI's movement.
When RSI begins to turn, the Fisher Transform can accentuate that change, producing a more pronounced inflection rather than the relatively gradual turn that may be visible in the raw RSI.
Features
Fisher Cross Signals
Provide arrow signals for bullish and bearish Fisher crossovers, with additional emphasis when they occur within significant RSI extremes.
Price Chart Highlights
Important Fisher crossover signals can optionally be projected directly onto the price chart as a vertical highlight.
Visual Themes
Choose from multiple built-in color themes or create a custom color scheme.
RSI Regime Coloring
Displays the RSI through a dynamic color progression representing bearish, neutral, and bullish momentum regimes.
RSI Line
Optionally, RSI can be plotted alongside it's Fisher Transform, giving a view of where momentum is as well as it's direction via the Fisher Transform.
How to Interpret FisherRSI
A useful way to think about FisherRSI is:
A bullish Fisher cross during an oversold RSI regime indicates that downside momentum is beginning to turn upward while momentum remains depressed.
A bearish Fisher cross during an overbought RSI regime indicates that upside momentum is beginning to turn downward while momentum remains elevated.
An important distinction is that FisherRSI identifies momentum transitions, not guaranteed price reversals.
FisherRSI is therefore best used as a momentum and timing tool, helping identify when the character of momentum is changing rather than attempting to predict every market reversal.
