CHoCH on alts: how I stop guessing “is this a reversal?”
You know that moment on alts: price nukes for weeks, suddenly does a cute little bounce, Twitter screams “bottom in”, and you sit there thinking:
“Is this THE reversal… or just another dead cat doing parkour?”
Let’s talk about CHoCH – Change of Character – and why I love it as an early structure-shift signal so I don’t have to play reversal roulette.
I’ll keep it in simple trader language, not textbook nonsense.
What’s CHoCH in plain English?
If trend is just “higher highs / higher lows” or “lower highs / lower lows”
then CHoCH is the first clean moment when price says:
“Yo, I’m not behaving like before.”
Downtrend example on an alt:
- Lower high
- Lower low
- Lower high
- Lower low
All good, bears are cruising.
Then suddenly:
- Price makes a low
- Bounces
- Comes back… but fails to make a new low
- Instead, it breaks above the last lower high
That break above the last lower high – that’s your CHoCH.
Structure just “changed character” from clean bearish to “hmm, something’s off.”
It’s not a full trend reversal confirmation, but it’s the first slap in the face:
“Stop blindly shorting this, genius.”
Why CHoCH is gold on alts
Alts are drama queens:
- Huge wicks
- Fake breakouts
- News spikes
- Market makers farming stops like it’s harvest season
If you just wait for a textbook uptrend (higher high, higher low, etc.), you’re usually late.
CHoCH lets you:
- See the first sign that sellers are losing control
- Shift from full-on bearish bias to “ok, maybe rotation coming”
- Start stalking long setups instead of shorting into the floor
I’m not saying “buy every CHoCH”. I’m saying: “stop fading moves when structure tells you the party changed.”
How I actually use CHoCH
On alts, I mainly watch 1h and 4h. Lower than that, it’s mostly noise and pain.
Basic flow for a bearish-to-bullish CHoCH:
1) Identify clear downtrend: obvious lower highs & lower lows.
2) Wait for price to form a low, then a bounce (a swing high).
3) Price revisits the lows but:
- either makes a slightly higher low
- or double-bottoms and launches
4) Key moment: price breaks above that “swing high” that formed on the bounce.
That break = CHoCH.
Downtrend behavior is broken.
After CHoCH, I’m not instantly ape-long.
I usually wait for:
- A pullback into the zone that got broken (former lower high area)
- Some reaction: wick rejections, smaller timeframe support holding
- Then I plan entries with tight invalidation under the local low
You’ll often see this on alts after brutal dumps:
Smart money loads quietly while retail still screams “short every bounce”.
CHoCH is the first visual clue they’re losing that fight.
Bearish CHoCH works the same in reverse:
- Uptrend with higher highs / higher lows
- First time price fails to make a new high
- Then breaks below the last higher low
That’s the heads-up: “maybe stop buying every green candle, champ.”
Where beginners mess up CHoCH
1) Calling every spike a CHoCH
One random wick above a high is not structure shift. You need:
- A clear prior trend
- A proper swing high/swing low
- Then a clean break of that swing
2) Forcing it on choppy ranges
If price is just sideways, there’s no “character” to change. It’s just noise.
3) Treating CHoCH as 100% reversal confirmation
It’s an early signal, not a holy grail.
Maybe I’m wrong, but if you think one broken high = “new bull market”, the market will gladly educate you.
How CHoCH helps your trading psychology
The real win isn’t just “better entries”, it’s less emotional guessing.
Instead of:
- “Is this the bottom? Is it over? What if I miss it?”
You switch to:
- “Has structure changed? Yes/No.”
It turns:
- FOMO into a checklist
- Panic into a plan
- Gut feelings into visual, repeatable signals
You stop buying every dip and shorting every rip, and start reacting to actual behavior shifts.
Quick mental summary
On alts, when you see:
- Strong downtrend
- First higher low + break of last lower high
That’s CHoCH – early hint that bears are losing it.
Use it to:
- Stop over-trading against evolving structure
- Start tracking potential rotation zones
- Build a more mature, patient game instead of full degen mode
Price always speaks.
CHoCH is just learning to hear the first word before the whole speech.
