Introduction to fundamental analysis on TradingView
Fundamental analysis evaluates whether an asset is undervalued or overvalued by determining its intrinsic value. Analysts assume that undervalued assets present buying opportunities, while overvalued assets carry a higher risk of loss. To determine a fair price, analysts examine macroeconomic data, industry trends, and corporate financial statements.
Fundamental vs technical analysis
Fundamental analysis relies on company reports and economic data to determine an asset's intrinsic value. In contrast, technical analysis studies historical market data and price charts to forecast future movements. Today, investors frequently combine both approaches: fundamentals to select the right asset, and technicals to identify optimal entry and exit points.
Core analytical approaches
- Top-down analysis: Starts at the macroeconomic level, narrows down to specific industries, and finally evaluates individual companies.
- Bottom-up analysis: Begins by analyzing a single company's financial health and competitive position before considering broader economic or industry factors.
Quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Quantitative analysis: Focuses on numerical data from the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement. It evaluates profitability, liabilities, and operational efficiency under standardized accounting principles.
- Qualitative analysis: Evaluates intangible elements such as management style, corporate culture, and competitive position. It assesses the sustainability of a company's business model and its strategy for generating income.
Limitations
While comprehensive, fundamental analysis has several drawbacks:
- It relies heavily on historical data, which may not accurately predict future performance.
- Corporate filings may lack full transparency.
- Evaluating the vast number of financial metrics is highly time-consuming.
- It generally does not account for market sentiment, which can heavily influence short-term price movements.
Despite these limitations, fundamental analysis remains a primary method for assessing a company's long-term durability and true market value.
