EMA Log Return

344
EMA Log Return (N Bars)

This indicator measures the logarithmic return of an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) over a configurable number of bars.

Instead of calculating returns from price, the script calculates returns from a smoothed series (EMA). This reduces noise and highlights structural momentum in the market.

The log return is computed as:

log( EMA(t) / EMA(t − N) )

Where:

EMA(t) — current EMA value

EMA(t − N) — EMA value N bars ago

Inputs

EMA Length — period of the exponential moving average (default: 100)

Return Bars (N) — number of bars used to compute the logarithmic return (default: 5)

Interpretation

Positive values → EMA is increasing relative to N bars ago (upward momentum)

Negative values → EMA is decreasing relative to N bars ago (downward momentum)

Zero line → no net change in the EMA over the selected interval

Because the calculation is based on EMA rather than raw price, the indicator can be useful for identifying smoother momentum regimes and trend acceleration.

Typical Use Cases

Trend strength estimation

Momentum regime detection

Quantitative signal inputs

Filtering noisy price returns

The parameters can be adjusted to match different trading horizons or market volatility.
