Q Market Breadth

Use on the Daily (1D) chart only.
WHAT IT IS
Q Quantora Market Breadth tracks the internal health of the S&P 500. It uses INDEX:S5FI, the percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading above their 50-day moving average, and turns it into a simple market state plus one rare, specific event: PANIC END ×2.
The idea: market-wide panics rarely end in a single move. Often breadth collapses, recovers slightly, then retests the panic zone. The second exit from panic, while the index is still in a real correction, has historically marked a durable turning point for broad US index funds.
MARKET STATE (based on the previous daily close, so it never repaints during the day)
- NORMAL: breadth 30 and above
- WEAK: breadth below 30
- PANIC: breadth below 20 (broad, market-wide selling)
- PANIC+: breadth below 15 (deep panic)
▲ PANIC END ×2: CONDITIONS
1. Breadth climbs back above 20 for the second time within 60 calendar days.
2. No confirmed recovery in between (3 consecutive days at or above 30 resets the chain).
3. The S&P 500 is in a correction: SPY at least 10% below its 52-week high.
All three must be true. The event is rare, typically once every few years.
CYCLE (how the track record is measured)
- Start: close of the ×2 day. Breadth is read from the previous daily close, so the event is confirmed one day after S5FI crosses 20. This is by design: no intraday repainting.
- The cycle is held until breadth reaches 60. A new dip into PANIC before that does not end it.
- When breadth reaches 60: if the gain is below 2%, the cycle ends. Otherwise a stop locks 50% of the gain.
- After that, the cycle ends at the stop or at the next PANIC.
A "CYCLE END ±x%" label marks the result on the chart.
TRACK RECORD TABLE
The same cycle is calculated live on SPY, QQQ, DIA, XLK and OEF, plus whatever symbol is on your chart, so you can check any instrument yourself.
- Cycles: completed cycles
- Positive: share of completed cycles with a gain
- Avg: arithmetic average return per completed cycle (not CAGR, not cumulative)
- Now: open cycle, if any
Results depend on the history loaded on your chart. For the full record since 1993, open SPY on the daily chart.
ALERTS
Create alert → "Q Breadth" → "Any alert() function call". You will be notified on PANIC END ×2 and on cycle end.
SETTINGS
Table positions and text size can be changed under Display. Fund symbols in the table can be replaced under the inputs.
IMPORTANT
- The results are hypothetical, before taxes, after an assumed 0.2% cost per cycle.
- The sample is small (9 completed cycles on SPY over the full available history), so treat the table as an illustration of historical behavior, not a forecast.
- The indicator describes market conditions; it does not tell you what to buy or sell.
