Fundamental Note: XAUUSD (Gold) 23 Feb 2026

247
Gold rebounded to a 3-week high near $5,160 as the U.S. Supreme Court’s tariff ruling revived uncertainty and pushed the USD lower, bringing defensive flows back into precious metals.
The decision struck down Trump’s sweeping emergency-power tariffs, and his response (raising a temporary universal tariff from 10% to 15%) keeps trade policy murky — a backdrop that typically supports “hedge” demand for gold.
Macro is not one-way bullish though: December core PCE ran hotter than expected (0.4% m/m; 3.0% y/y), strengthening expectations the Fed may not cut before June and keeping real-yield pressure relevant. That inflation impulse can cap follow-through unless the USD keeps weakening or growth data rolls over.
Geopolitics remains the key optionality driver, with US–Iran tensions and military-risk headlines balanced against signals Tehran is willing to discuss nuclear concessions in exchange for sanctions relief.
Structurally, robust central-bank buying and diversification flows remain a medium-term floor under dips, even if positioning swings are sharp day-to-day.
Bottom line: gold is trading as a “policy-uncertainty hedge” right now, so tariff headlines + USD direction matter more than usual. If tariff uncertainty persists and the dollar stays pressured, the market can re-test higher resistance; if inflation stays sticky and yields firm, pullbacks can be fast.

🟢 Bullish factors:

1. Tariff-policy uncertainty revives “defensive” demand and pressures the USD.
2. Geopolitical risk premium (US–Iran tensions) supports safe-haven bids.
3. Ongoing central-bank buying / diversification flows underpin dips.

🔴 Bearish factors:

1. Hotter core PCE keeps “no cut before June” pricing alive → real-yield headwind.
2. Any rapid geopolitical de-escalation can unwind the risk premium.
3. If the USD stabilizes and yields rise, gold’s rally can stall quickly.

🎯 Expected targets: Bullish-to-range bias while holding 5,100–5,050, with upside toward 5,300–5,400; a clean break above 5,400 opens 5,550–5,700. If gold loses 5,050, a pullback toward 5,000–4,950 becomes likely, with deeper support around 4,850–4,800 on a yield-led repricing.
