Higher Timeframe Price Action Scanner

8 569
The Higher Timeframe Price Action Scanner shows you the price action trend direction of up to 6 higher timeframes at once, displayed as simple green and red dots in a panel below your chart. Instead of flipping between timeframes to check the bigger picture, you see every trend you care about on one screen so you can trade in the direction of the overall market.

Developed by Trend Friend, this scanner runs a full set of custom price action formulas on each timeframe you select. It also marks the moments when every timeframe agrees on one direction, can scan a completely different ticker than the one on your chart, and sends its trend direction out to other indicators so you can use it as a trend filter for your entry signals.

How the Trend Is Calculated

Every timeframe you turn on is run through the same set of custom price action formulas. This is the exact same signal algorithm used in our 1 Minute Scalping Indicator, so the scanner's dots will always match the trend direction that indicator shows when compared on the same timeframe. The formulas evaluate several parts of price behavior on each candle:
  • Candle Direction & Structure - the size and shape of each candle and where it closes compared to the candles before it
  • Adaptive Candle & Wick Sizing - candle bodies and wicks are measured against adaptive averages built from recent candles, so what counts as a large or small candle adjusts to each market and timeframe automatically
  • Breaks of Recent Highs & Lows - closes beyond recent highs or lows that show real follow-through instead of weak pokes
  • Multi-Candle Patterns - engulfing moves, consecutive candle runs and wick rejection behavior
  • Market Structure - where price sits compared to recent swing highs and swing lows

Each timeframe is always in one of two states: bullish or bearish. When the bullish conditions are met on a timeframe, that row turns green and stays green until the bearish conditions are met, then it flips to red. The states alternate one at a time, so every color change on a row is a clear trend change for that timeframe. The exact conditions, thresholds and lookback lengths inside the formulas are proprietary and are what make this script worth protecting, but the categories above are what those formulas measure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Scanner Panel

The panel shows one row of dots per timeframe. The top row is Timeframe #1 and each row below it is the next timeframe in your settings, so keep your timeframes in order from lowest at #1 to highest at #6. Green dots mean that timeframe is in a bullish trend and red dots mean it is in a bearish trend, and both colors are adjustable.

Each of the 6 timeframes has its own on/off toggle. Timeframes that are turned off do not display in the panel and are also left out of the alignment signals and the external trend output, so the scanner only uses the timeframes that matter for your setup. If you want to use fewer than 6, turn off Timeframe #6 first and work upward from there.

Trade Modes

  • Fast - Reacts the quickest and catches trend changes the earliest, but will have more false flips
  • Medium - Uses the same checks as Fast but also requires the close to break beyond the previous candle before a flip, so it flips less often and holds trends longer
  • Smooth But Fast (default, recommended) - An expanded set of price action conditions that catches major moves early while filtering out more of the noise. This mode is adjustable with the setting below

Number of Previous Candles to Analyze - Only affects Smooth But Fast mode. This sets how many previous candles the formulas use as a reference when calculating trend changes. A lower number reacts faster and gives earlier flips, while a higher number reacts slower and holds trends longer. It only affects some of the calculations, so major moves are still caught early either way.

Average Candle Size Rejection (on by default) - Blocks trend flips on candles that measure too small compared to the adaptive candle size averages, because small candles breaking structure produce false signals more often. Turning it off allows flips on any candle size. Leaving it on filters out false flips but can occasionally make a timeframe hold its trend longer than you would like.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

All Timeframes Aligned Signals

When every enabled timeframe is bullish at the same time, a dot prints above the top row in the all bullish color (light blue by default). When every enabled timeframe is bearish, a dot prints below the bottom row in the all bearish color (orange by default). These are the highest conviction trend conditions the scanner can show, because every timeframe you track agrees on one direction. The alignment dots can be turned off and both colors are adjustable.

Scan a Different Ticker

By default the scanner analyzes the symbol on your chart, but you can set it to scan any other ticker in the settings. If you trade pairs that move together or opposite of each other, you can add two copies of the scanner watching both tickers for extra trend confluence.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

External Trend Direction Output

The scanner sends out a trend direction value that other indicators can read: 1 when all enabled timeframes are bullish, -1 when all enabled timeframes are bearish and 0 when they are mixed. In any indicator that accepts an external source as a signal filter, set the source to "Higher Timeframe Price Action Scanner: Trend Direction To Send To External Indicators" and that indicator will only give signals that agree with the higher timeframe trend. This value is not drawn on the chart, it is only available as a source for other indicators.

How to Trade with This Scanner

  • When most or all of the dots are green, look for long positions. When most or all are red, look for short positions
  • Treat the alignment dots as your strongest condition. When every timeframe agrees, trade in that direction and hold with more confidence
  • When the rows are mixed, the market is undecided, so size down or stand aside until the timeframes line up again
  • Use the scanner as the trend guide and take your entries from your chart timeframe tools, only in the scanner's direction
  • Watch the lower timeframe rows for early flips. A lower timeframe flipping against the higher rows is often your first exit warning

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Alerts

  • All Bullish Scanner Alert - fires when every enabled timeframe turns bullish
  • All Bearish Scanner Alert - fires when every enabled timeframe turns bearish

Set these through TradingView's alert menu so you know the moment the timeframes align without watching the panel all day. For alerts you can fully rely on, use them with the Confirmed Only signal setting described below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Higher Timeframe Data, Signal Confirmation and Repainting

Every dot in this scanner is built from higher timeframe data requests, and the Allow Unconfirmed Signals setting controls exactly how that data is handled.

Confirmed Only (default) - Each row only uses fully closed higher timeframe candles. A trend flip appears on a row only after that timeframe's candle has closed with the flip confirmed. Once shown, a confirmed flip is permanent: it can never be removed, moved or repainted, and historical bars will always match what you saw live. The tradeoff is that you see each trend change slightly later, because the scanner waits for the higher timeframe candle to close.

Unconfirmed Is Ok - Each row also reads the currently forming higher timeframe candle. This shows you a developing trend change as it happens, but while that candle is still open the flip can appear and then reverse if price changes before the close. That means this mode can repaint on the open higher timeframe candle. The moment the candle closes, the state locks in and never changes. Use this mode when you want the earliest possible warning and are comfortable confirming the move yourself.

The script does not use lookahead to access future data anywhere, in either mode.

Settings Overview

  • Refresh the Indicator - A checkbox that reloads the scanner if TradingView shows a loading or timeout error, without removing it from your chart
  • Signal Settings - Trade mode (Fast, Medium or Smooth But Fast), number of previous candles to analyze, average candle size rejection on/off and the Confirmed Only / Unconfirmed Is Ok choice
  • All Timeframes Aligned - Alignment signals on/off plus the all bullish and all bearish dot colors
  • Ticker to Scan - Leave blank for the chart symbol or set any other ticker
  • Higher Timeframes - Six timeframe slots, each with its own on/off toggle and a timeframe choice from 1 minute up to 12 months
  • Bull & Bear Colors - The colors for the bullish and bearish trend dots

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Markets and Timeframes

This scanner works on all markets, including stocks, crypto, forex and futures, and on any chart timeframe. Because the formulas use pure price action with no volume data, it also works on symbols that have no volume, such as indices. Scan timeframes range from 1 minute up to 1 year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Important Notes and Limitations

  • Every timeframe you scan should be higher than your chart timeframe, and the slots should stay in order from lowest at #1 to highest at #6. Timeframes set lower than your chart will not give correct results
  • In Unconfirmed Is Ok mode, a flip on the open higher timeframe candle can reverse before that candle closes. Use Confirmed Only if you never want repainting
  • Very long scan timeframes may not display results if the symbol does not have enough historical candles for the calculations
  • The dots show trend direction, not entry signals by themselves. Combine the scanner with your own entry method and analysis
  • If the scanner ever fails to load, check or uncheck the Refresh the Indicator box in the settings to reload it without losing your settings
  • No indicator is right all of the time, and past results never guarantee future performance. Use the trend information as a decision tool, manage your risk on every trade and always use your own judgment
