Cross Structure Levels (CSL)

Cross Structure Levels (CSL) is a structural tool designed to help visualize moving average crosses in a more practical way.

In many trading environments, moving average crosses are used as a confirmation of directional bias. However, these events are often missed in real time, and the subsequent price movement develops after the initial cross.

This script transforms those crosses into horizontal levels, allowing traders to track how price interacts with them over time.

Concept
  • A cross between a fast and a slow moving average is treated as a structural event
  • The closing price of that cross is plotted as a horizontal level
  • That level extends forward and can act as a reference for price behavior

Instead of reacting to the cross itself, CSL helps observe how price behaves around that level afterward.

Important Clarification
  • A moving average cross is not a trading signal by itself
  • The plotted level is not an entry or exit signal
  • It is a contextual reference that may help confirm market conditions

Key Features
  • Choice between EMA and SMA
  • Customizable lengths (default 9/21)
  • Multi-timeframe cross detection (e.g., using 3m or 5m crosses on a 1m chart)
  • Session filtering (New York session by default)
  • Option to display only current session/day
  • Automatic removal of outdated or broken levels
  • Optional retest labeling

How to Use
  • Use levels as contextual references, not as standalone signals
  • Observe reactions when price returns to a level after a cross
  • Combine with other tools such as VWAP, opening ranges, or support/resistance
  • Focus on price behavior rather than the cross itself

Notes
  • This script is designed for intraday analysis
  • Different moving average settings may produce different results
  • Best used as part of a broader trading framework

Sürüm Notları
Release Notes – CSL v2.6

This update expands Cross Structure Levels (CSL) to support both short-term confirmation and higher-timeframe structural analysis while preserving the original concept of converting moving-average crosses into horizontal reference levels.

New in v2.6

  • Regular Trading Hours calculation – Moving averages can now be calculated using Regular Trading Hours only, excluding extended-hours data from the MA calculation.
  • EMA and SMA support – Users can select the moving-average type and independently define the fast and slow lengths. The original 9/21 configuration remains available, while combinations such as 20/40 SMA can be used for broader structural analysis.
  • Cross Level Price – Added two methods for determining where a cross level is plotted:
    • Confirmation Close – plots the level at the closing price that confirmed the cross.
    • MA Cross Value – plots the level using the value of the two moving averages at the confirmed cross.
  • Multi-timeframe structure – Crosses can continue to be calculated from a timeframe different from the chart timeframe. For example, a trader can display 1-hour MA cross levels while viewing a lower-timeframe chart.
  • Level Display Mode – Added controls for managing historical cross levels and reducing visual clutter:
    • Smart Clean – dynamically manages previous levels according to the existing CSL cleaning logic.
    • Last N Crosses – retains only the most recent number of cross levels, regardless of direction.
    • All Crosses – preserves available historical cross levels for observation and analysis.
  • Crosses to Keep – When using Last N Crosses mode, users can specify how many recent cross levels should remain visible.

Usage Note

The additional settings make it possible to use separate CSL instances for different analytical purposes. A shorter moving-average combination may be used to observe intraday changes, while a higher-timeframe configuration can provide broader structural context.

Cross levels remain contextual references. A moving-average cross, and the horizontal level derived from it, should not be interpreted as a standalone entry or exit signal.
