A Costa Rican court sentenced two men to 12 years in prison each for money laundering in a case tied to the 2018 kidnapping and killing of U.S. businessman William Sean Creighton Kopko. According to ChainCatcher, the victim's family paid a ransom of about 148 bitcoin at the time, which was valued at about $1 million.
The court found that the defendants received part of the ransom and deposited it into wallets they controlled to conceal the origin of the assets.
