Warner Bros. Discovery Sues Amazon Over Employee Poaching

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD, Financials), the media and entertainment company behind HBO, CNN and Warner Bros. studios, sued Amazon over allegations that it poached employees and interfered with existing employment contracts.

The dispute centers on Pia Barlow, a former executive vice president of marketing for HBO Max, who left for a newly created role at Amazon MGM Studios last week.

Warner Bros. said Barlow's contract does not expire until the end of October 2027. The lawsuit alleges Amazon knew about the agreement but encouraged her to leave more than 16 months early.

The company also claimed Amazon has targeted, or may target, other Warner Bros. employees.

Warner Bros. further alleged that Amazon structured employment agreements in a way that allowed new hires to leave existing contracts while assuring them the company would provide legal protection if sued.

Amazon had not responded to Seeking Alpha's request for comment.The case highlights competition for senior media executives as streaming companies expand their content and marketing operations.

Investors will now watch Amazon's response and whether the dispute leads to damages, an injunction or changes to Barlow's employment status.
