SOL/USD: Solana Posts Blowout Week with 16% Pop, Outswimming the Big Fish in Crypto Sea

1 min read
Key points:
  • Solana hits $250 before sliding
  • ETF hype builds up – when ETF?
  • Treasuries hungry for Solana coins

Solana has been quietly stacking gains while Ether and Bitcoin have lagged behind. What’s driving prices?

📣 Solana Prices Jump to $250

  • Solana SOLUSD slipped under $240 Monday morning following a super week which added more than 16% to its market cap. The peak arrived Sunday when a single Solana token was going for as high as $250.
  • That’s just about $40 away from the all-time high in January and a strong showing and an even stronger comeback from a cryptocurrency that was once associated with the failed cryptopreneur Sam Bankman-Fried.
  • The recent leg up easily outdid what Bitcoin and Ethereum could come up with. Bitcoin gained a modest 3.8% over the past week to float near $116,000 while Ether advanced a more solid 7% to $4,580.

💥 Solana in the Spotlight

  • Two main things are driving the demand around Solana and both of them could be summed up with one word. Hype. Not uncommon, right? Hype around Solana’s first exchange-traded funds is helping buoy the token’s valuation.
  • But also, the treasury trend is picking up pace among alternative tokens. Now that Ethereum’s price is increasingly tied to corporations slapping the token on their balance sheet, Solana is following in those same footsteps.

🎁 The Hot ETF Trend

  • As of today, there are still no spot exchange-traded funds that are packaged with Solana coins. What are spot ETFs? Those are investment vehicles that hold genuine tokens, allowing participants to fill their portfolio with shares representing real Solana ownership.
  • A flurry of ETF issuers are waiting in line, hoping they’ll be the first to get an approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Most analysts say it’s only a matter of time before the ordinary non-crypto native investor gets easy and regulated access to Solana through ETFs.

📜 The Treasury Strategy

  • And the second big catalyst is treasuries. The fairly early-stage, even experimental, strategy where corporations hold crypto on their balance sheet is spilling into the Solana space at a rapid pace.
  • There’s a growing number of companies making that step, including Galaxy Digital, which a few days ago acquired nearly $500 million worth of Solana to put on its balance sheet. Is institutional demand the next big demand driver? About 15 companies in total have now purchased a nearly 2% stake in Solana worth roughly $2.5 billion.
