GNRC: Generac Stock Pumps 18% on $2.4 Billion Amazon Data Center Deal

1 min read
Key points:
  • Generac shares soar 18%
  • Amazon deal could reach $8B
  • Backup power is in fashionable

Generator maker landed a potential $8 billion deal with Amazon, turning backup power into one of the most visible new trades in the AI buildout.

Generac gets an Amazon-sized endorsement

  • Generac shares GNRC surged more than 18% Thrusday after the company announced a long-term agreement to supply backup generators for Amazon’s data centers.
  • The initial commitment covers $2.4 billion of generator deliveries in 2027 and 2028. The broader arrangement could eventually reach $8 billion, depending on Amazon’s future purchases and payments.
  • Amazon shares rose more modestly because the deal is strategically important rather than transformational for a company of Amazon’s scale.
  • For Generac, however, the contract is large relative to its existing business and validates its effort to move deeper into large-scale data-center power.

🏭 AI needs electricity that does not blink

  • Artificial-intelligence data centers require enormous amounts of power and cannot simply shut down when the grid experiences a disruption. Generac’s equipment provides backup generation that can keep servers running during outages or while new grid capacity is being connected.
  • In other words, the AI trade is broader than Nvidia, AMD and cloud. The infrastructure chain also includes power generation, cooling, transmission, construction and fuel supply.
  • Generac has committed to tripling its manufacturing capacity for large-format generators by August 2027. The Amazon contract gives that expansion a major tailwind, but it also creates an execution test: the company must build capacity quickly without sacrificing margins or delivery schedules.

📄 The warrant matters too

  • Amazon received warrants to purchase up to 1.69 million Generac shares at $200.93 each. Around 308,000 shares are immediately exercisable, with the rest vesting as Amazon makes additional generator payments.
  • The warrants give Amazon exposure to Generac’s success and help align the two companies over the life of the agreement. They also create potential dilution for existing shareholders, although the commercial opportunity is the bigger issue for now.
  • Quick tip: Don’t treat the headline $8 billion as guaranteed revenue. The initial $2.4 billion is the clearest commitment, while the remaining value hangs on future orders, production capacity and Amazon’s data-center expansion plans.
