What are symbols and tickers?
A symbol, or ticker, is a short code for a financial instrument. For example, AAPL is Apple stock, SPX is the S&P 500 index, and EURUSD is the euro against the US dollar.
Each exchange sets its own rules for symbols, so one asset can have different symbols in different places. Toyota is 7203 in Tokyo and TM in New York. To point to one exact symbol, TradingView adds the exchange in front: NASDAQ:AAPL.
Some symbols show economic data instead of something you can trade. For example, USINTR is the US interest rate and UNRATE is the US unemployment rate.
How to open symbol search
- Click the search box at the top of any TradingView page.
- Press Ctrl+K (Windows) or Cmd+K (macOS).
- On Supercharts, click the symbol name in the top-left corner, or just start typing.
How to search
Type a ticker (NVDA), a name or keyword (gold, pound), or an ISIN or CUSIP code. ISIN and CUSIP are official ID codes for securities, so they help you find exactly the right one. For example, Apple's ISIN is US0378331005.
Each result shows the symbol, its full name, its type (like stock, fund etf, or spot crypto), and the exchange or data source. Always check the name and type before you open a symbol: different instruments can share the same letters. For example, MES is both a futures contract and a Morningstar index.
If a row shows several small logos and a number like +26, the instrument is available from several sources. Click the arrow on the right to choose one. For futures, the arrow opens the list of contracts. A symbol ending in 1!, like ES1!, is a continuous contract that always shows the nearest expiration.
Filter by asset type
Use the tabs at the top to narrow the list: Stocks, Funds, Futures, Forex, Crypto, Indices, Bonds, Economy, and Options. Each tab has its own filters, such as country, type, sector, or source. For example, open Bonds and set the country to Germany to find German government bond yields.
The Options tab lists stocks, ETFs, indices, and futures that have options. Click one to open its option chain with calls, puts, strike prices, and implied volatility.
Build spread charts
On Supercharts, you can combine symbols with +, -, *, and / to create a spread chart. It shows how instruments move compared to each other. Type a formula and press Enter:
- NVDA/AMD shows how NVIDIA performs compared to AMD.
- US10Y-US02Y shows the gap between 10-year and 2-year US Treasury yields.
- GC1!/SI1! shows the gold-to-silver ratio.
To keep a formula for later, add it to your watchlist.
