From paper trading to deep portfolio analytics in a few clicks

May 14

Paper trading is a great way to test ideas without putting real money on the line. But once you’ve been at it for a while, you start asking the bigger questions. How does my strategy stack up against the S&P 500? What’s my real risk-adjusted return? Which positions are doing the heavy lifting, and which are dragging me down?

Until now, getting those answers meant exporting data and re-entering trades by hand. With this update, you can connect any of your paper trading sub-accounts to Portfolios and import the entire trade history in one go.

How it works

You’ll see a new option, Import from paper trading, on the Portfolios page next to the existing creation methods. Pick the sub-account, and we’ll pull in every filled trade, with its symbol, side, quantity, fill price, commission, timestamp. Your starting balance comes in as an opening cash deposit on the date of your earliest trade, so the numbers line up with what you see in paper trading.

The new portfolio inherits the base currency of the sub-account and picks up its name by default, so it’s easy to keep multiple strategies side by side.

You can also top up a portfolio created before. The Add transaction dropdown offers Import from paper trading. Pick a sub-account and we’ll merge in any new trades since your last import.

This update will be helpful to traders running strategies on paper trading who want to see real portfolio-grade analytics — benchmark comparison, performance attribution, holdings breakdown. If you’ve been doing the export-and-paste dance, this is the end of it.

Keep in mind

Here are a few things to remember that will help make sure your workflow is smooth:

  • This works like a CSV import — it’s not a live sync. New trades you make on a paper trading account after the import won’t appear automatically. Re-run the import whenever you want to catch up.
  • Paper trading tracks trades, not cash flow, so there are no deposits, withdrawals, or dividends to import — only your filled trades and the opening cash that funded the account.
  • If your sub-account has open margin positions, your portfolio will flag a tip suggesting you add cash so the math reconciles.
  • Tier limits still apply. If your import would exceed your plan’s holdings or transaction cap, we’ll create the portfolio within your limits only.
  • Only instruments supported by Portfolios will be imported. If your sub-account holds anything outside that list, import will skip it.

We hope this update will help you perfect your strategies and find more helpful trading insights. Let us know what you think, your feedback is the moving power behind all our improvements.
