Introduction to TradingView alerts

Alerts help you stay on top of key market events by sending timely notifications. They can be super simple — for example, tracking when Bitcoin reaches a certain price — or advanced, like those based on indicators and strategies involving multiple calculations.

Let's take a look at some of the key benefits of using alerts:

  • Instant notification: With tailored alerts, you can react to market changes in an instant.
  • Speed and reliability: Alerts run on powerful servers, ensuring fast and stable performance.
  • Time efficiency: There is no need to spend extra time manually tracking market movements.
  • Cross-device support: Alerts work seamlessly on the web version, as well as in the desktop and mobile apps.
  • Insight and learning: See how the market responds to specific events and improve your strategies over time.
  • Advanced customization: With multiple built-in and advanced conditions, you can tailor alerts to your exact trading strategy.
  • Pine Script® integration: Alerts are fully compatible with Pine Script — TradingView's proprietary programming language for traders.

Alert types

You may follow different trading strategies and use unique tools, but the instruments you rely on will generally fall into one of three categories: indicators, drawings, and/or chart types. Our alerts work with each of these and can be configured to notify you promptly of market changes.

To better understand how alerts work, here is how they are categorized:

  • Price alerts notify you of chart symbol price changes.
  • Technical alerts notify you of value changes or when a custom condition is met for drawing tools, Pine indicators and strategies, or chart patterns.
  • Watchlist alerts create a single alert for an entire watchlist, using the same condition for each symbol. Each alert operates independently for every symbol in the list.

Price alerts are triggered when the symbol's price:

  • Reaches a certain level.
  • Exceeds or falls below a certain level.

Technical alerts are triggered when a value:

  • Reaches, exceeds, or falls below a certain level.
  • Reaches or exceeds a range's boundaries from a certain direction.
  • Moves up or down by a particular amount within a specified number of bars.

How to access alerts

Every TradingViewer can create alerts to respond to market changes in real time. Just head to Supercharts from the dropdown menu and choose the symbol you want to create an alert for.

Alerts can be created on data series, indicators, chart patterns, strategies, and drawing tools. Alerts for data series are independent of time intervals, but for other types, the interval does matter, as it directly affects indicator calculations.

For example, if you want to know when NVDA stock hits a certain price, select NVDA in the Symbol search menu. Once your Superchart is displaying NVDA, you can set the alert using one of the following methods:

  • Press ALT + A (Windows) or ⌥ + A (macOS).
  • Click the Create alert button on the upper toolbar.
  • Access the Alert manager on the right toolbar, then click the Create alert button.
  • Right-click on the chart and select Add alert on
  • Right-click directly on a line or channel to create an alert specifically for those instruments.
  • Hover over the price scale and click the Plus button. It will appear next to the scale and follow your cursor, showing the exact value and allowing you to create a quick alert.

Note: If you change an indicator’s parameters after creating an alert, the alert will still trigger using the original settings.

To create or modify alerts more efficiently, use shortcuts. You can view the Keyboard shortcuts page from the chart by clicking your avatar, then selecting the Keyboard shortcuts option.

How to receive alert notifications

You can always choose how and where you want to be notified when an alert is triggered:

  • App notification: Download the latest TradingView mobile app to get notified directly on your phone.
  • Toast notification: When enabled, a pop-up message will appear even if you are browsing in another tab. (For this to work correctly, you must allow your browser to show desktop notifications for TradingView).
  • Email: Alerts are sent to the email address registered in your profile settings.
  • Webhook URL: Sends a POST request to a designated URL, allowing you to trigger external bots or scripts.
  • Sound: Once an alert is triggered, you will hear an audible sound notification.
  • Plain text: A free method for sending text messages to your phone.

Alerts duration

Alerts have an expiration period, after which they will automatically stop. The maximum lifetime of a standard alert is two months. However, for Premium and Ultimate plans, an open-ended option is available, allowing the alert to remain active indefinitely.

Note: Alerts are automatically deactivated if all of the following conditions are met:

  • The alert was created more than one year ago.
  • The alert hasn’t triggered for over a year.
  • The alert hasn’t been edited for over a year.
