RNWH: breakout, consolidation, continuation?Nice breakout here from Renew, on the back of its acquisition of high voltage cabling firm PBU for up to £50m.
What followed is typical of a decent breakout. A little consolidation from the profit takers.
Friday looks like a big rejection candle, but it came on much lower volume. So the top of that candle at 1086p looks like the next logical resistance to break.
One to watch. Further compression in price would be telling. Can the momentum take it further?
LLOY: Budget relief rally quickly sold intoBanks were a key feature of the Budget, and it’s fascinating to watch how their shares traded.
The bank surcharge went up from 3% to 6%. That was gentler than feared, so on Wednesday anyone holding banks thought they’d got off lightly. Lloyds was up around 4% at one point.
By the closing bell, most of that had been given back. All that was left was a deep rejection wick above the candle. Add the huge volume on that single day and you can start to picture the selling it took to bring the price

MAB: heavy volume finally pushes price to new highsMitchells & Butlers is showing very strong price momentum. These moves often pass me by, unless there’s some unusual volume.
On Wednesday, Budget day, volume jumped as expected. The price teetered on the edge of resistance and refused to go higher, yet shares kept changing hands. Quite possibly the sellers being taken out.
Thursday and Friday kept the heavy volume going. This time, though, the price broke into a new high.
The Budget froze business rates for hospitality in real terms for two y
BOWL: 4x volume as the range starts to tightenTaking a very short term view, Hollywood Bowl sits right in the middle of a well established range. It has run between 240p and 302p since the middle of the year.
I normally avoid taking positions in the middle of a range. I want the risk versus reward stacked heavily in my favour.
The huge slug of volume on Friday caught my eye though, at over 4x the average. It may be a book build, matching up two large institutions. But it comes alongside a series of rising lows over the last five sessions,
SAGA: can it break 1,000p or is a pullback due?Disclaimer: I hold $SAGA.
At a valuation of around £1.25bn, I don’t see Saga as demanding. First half profits nearly doubled at the interims. Insurance broking beat expectations, and cruise still isn’t running at full capacity.
The run from 600p to around 900p looks well justified to me. Plenty of volume supported that move.
So why include it this week? Friday looked like a strong round of profit taking, which is to be expected now and again.
Volume came in at 2.9x the average as the price h
NXR if the seller has gone, the rerating beginsA solid consolidation since mid September looks to have come to an end.
Just look at all that volume concentrated between 288p and 305p. It looks like genuine accumulation.
On Thursday the price broke free on very heavy volume, nearly 8x the average. That could be a large block of shares changing hands between two institutions.
Interestingly, on 17 August Canaccord Genuity cut its stake from 9.78% to 4.94%, taking it below 5%. Any further selling may not show up in the filings.
Either way, t
MHA accumulation building around 134p?This looks like a well formed trading range between 130p and 160p. Price is in the lower half, so there’s scope to trade back to the top. Only if there’s logic behind it, of course.
The volume profile looks attractive. The white line marks 134p as an important level with lots of volume, so there could be some accumulation going on.
On Thursday the price broke free of recent resistance, with strong volume behind the move.
147p looks like the next logical resistance. Let’s see how price reacts
GMET huge volume, tiny candle, big message.I had to include this one. Someone left a very kind comment this week. He’s learning VPA but can’t quite get his head around it yet. I’m fairly new to writing, so if I haven’t explained things clearly, I apologise. I may do a feature on it if I ever find the time.
I’ll admit it was hard for me at first too. Every trade needs a buyer and a seller, so surely all volume is equal? True. So why do similar sized candles come with very different volume bars?
The answer is who is in a hurry. Buyers wa
DFS could Help to Buy spark demand for sofas too?Looking at the chart alone, I’m undecided. A little price exhaustion seems to be setting in, with a series of upper rejection wicks over the last couple of weeks. 150p is proving a tough line to break.
If it does break, a run back to the 170p highs wouldn’t be out of the question.
That said, if you’re a long term investor, this is just noise. The bigger picture matters more.
On 26 September the Government announced a new scheme called Your First Home. First time buyers would put down a 2.5% d
GPE buyers defend 300p as the breakout takes shapeDisclosure: long LSE:GPE via spread bet. I couldn’t resist. For the record, I don’t know much about the company. I’m just riding the price action.
The price has made a double bottom, with buyers defending hard between 300p and 310p.
Crucially, on Wednesday it pushed above short term resistance around 318p. The lower wick showed lower prices being rejected, and volume was 1.8x the average. It took real effort to clear the sellers at 318p. These are the ingredients I like to see.
Thursday pro
GBG buyers absorb supply, eyes on 190pWith cyber attacks on the rise, I’m curious whether this one picks up some of the attention. GBG specialises in identity checks rather than data breaches, though. A breach usually means someone got in through the back door, not that they pretended to be someone else.
Thursday’s bullish engulfing candle is a strong sign. Volume was 2.1x the average, which points to genuine buying.
Above the current price, the volume profile shows plenty of activity up to 163p, then it thins out all the way to 1
CER: can buyers absorb the remaining supply?Looking back at my notes, this one shows why you shouldn’t catch a falling knife. It also shows why you shouldn’t base decisions on my notes.
When I get it wrong, I don’t hide it. It’s there for all to see, which is why doing your own research is crucial.
The price is trundling along around 682p, retesting the low of that big gap down in mid September. Lots of volume is coming in too.
This could be the sellers being absorbed. But if there aren’t enough buyers to soak them up, it will simply b
2 year rectangle for M&Scan Marks and Spencer's breakthrough 414 and break out of this rectangle. The rectangle is in a bullish uptrend and has lasted two years. Of course the theory is that this would be a big consolidation and very likely to move to the upside. Trade using your own research And this is not a solicitation to take any action whatsoever.
GTLY consolidating beneath a low-volume zoneI hold LSE:GTLY and I’m still nursing a loss from around 105p. I can’t part with it yet. The dividend is still decent, even after the final was cut to 2p, and I believe it’s picking up plenty of work in the AI data centre space. That space is riddled with red tape and legal cases, because locals don’t want to live next to a warehouse full of servers whirring away.
In January I noted that Gateley estimated pre Budget uncertainty knocked about £3m off first half revenue, which it expected to re
IGR: can the momentum carry through to the highs?Just a small mention on this one, very clearly has some momentum behind it, and has been climbing steadily from around 85p on rising slightly rising volumes.
Another strong push on Friday as volumes were again transacted nearly 3 x the average, and importantly the price cleared the previous high on the 2nd Oct which was at 97.2p. That matters because if someone unloaded at 97.2p before and the price has just broken through it, it clears the order book at that level, thus pushing the price throu
LBG 18.8% of the free float traded in a day.Another possible stopping volume setup.
I’ve been building a new indicator called Float TO%. It measures how much of a company’s free float trades in a single day. Most of the time it’s under 2% and not worth mentioning.
LBG Media stood out. Friday’s volume equated to around 18.8% of its free float. That’s a huge block of shares changing hands.
Volume is heavily concentrated at this level, and the candle looks like a typical bullish response, though I’d have expected it to climb a bit more.
FSJ buyers may be quietly building positions?Stopping volume could be taking place here. James Fisher has fallen from grace, and volume is just starting to creep back in.
It’s not the biggest spike on the chart, but size isn’t everything. Anyone building a sizeable position wants to do it quietly, without drawing attention. I think that could be happening here.
Volume over the last two days was only 1.5x the average, but look at the result. A deep wick down on Thursday, and a pick up in price on Friday.

APN could this re-rate back towards the highs? The gap up on 1 June could still be acting as support. Long term holders should work out what’s changed since then, and not just from the RNS feed. Look at the wider market and competitors too. That’s the fun of investing.
There’s a nice rounded bottom forming, and the falls are being plugged by rising buy orders.
Thursday showed tight price action, a small body and a lower wick, but a big volume spike. Again, possibly two large blocks being matched.
